Though not extraordinarily prolific, Joaquin Rodrigo’s music circulates on the classical music scene fairly regularly, and has for much of the 20th century. His most popular piece is arguably Concierto de Aranjuez, whose second movement is incredibly lyrical and stirring. He was particularly well known for his works of solo instrument accompanied by orchestra, of which Aranjuez is one. Here we have a flute concertante piece, the Concierto Pastoral, first movement. This lively and invigorating piece displays the virtuosity of the instrument and a wide range of interesting orchestral colors.

Joachim Rodrigo was pretty hip.
