Duke Ellington is widely recognized as not just one of the great jazz musicians of all time, but is often considered one of the most masterful American composers as well. His compositions were carefully thought out, meticulously detailed and expertly performed (by his band and often by him at the piano). Often, he would rework standards in his own style, and classical pieces weren’t exempt from his hand. This is Grieg’s famous “In the Hall of the Mountain King”, but with a little high hat added in for something a little different.
