Of Opus 74 by Haydn, the most famous quartet in the set of three is the third, known commonly by its epithet, “Rider” or “Horseman”. The nickname comes from the final movement, which includes a familiar section with theme accompanied by a figure in the lower instruments which articulates each half beat, but in alternation between the players. The effect is a galloping jaunt. However, the rest of the quartet is not to be overlooked. Here is the first movement, its grace-notes characterizing the opening bars.
Played by the Kodaly Quartet.
